Track and Field Jumps Ahead in Competition

The Franklin Academy Track Team has been busy lately. After competing in 7 meets against mostly 3A and 4A competitors, the team has qualified athletes in 9 different events so far. Senior Abby Dunn is the most recent qualifier. While competing in the 300m hurdles this weekend for the first time, she posted the second fastest time in the mideast region. She also qualified in the long jump at a previous meet. Sophomore Karrington Garland holds the fastest 400m time in the mideast and has qualified right behind Dunn in the 300m hurdles. Fellow sprinter, Stephen Elliott, nailed his qualifying time in the 400m in his first meet of the season and is close to qualifying in the 100m and 200m. Mid distance runner, Zachary Bunner, has the fastest 800m time in the mideast and is a second away from qualifyng in the 1600m. The girls' distance team is enjoying continued success after a strong XC season and currently are the second fastest 4x800 relay team in 1A. Freshman Leah Given leads the mideast in the 800m with teammates Hannah Franklin and Anna Schulz close behind. Franklin and Schulz have also qualified in the 1600m along with sophomore standout, Caitlyn Burkett, who is ranked #2 in 1A. After an exceptional winter track season, Burkett also holds the #2 spot in the 3200. Not bad for a team that practices in a parking lot!
